In the months after the end of the First World War, Germany delivered no less than 354 aircraft to Belgium as war reparation. All of these machines were stored at Evere airfield and together with vast numbers of abandoned aircraft recuperated at former German airbases in Belgium added up to almost 700 machines. A large number of these aircraft were returned to flying condition to be test-flown by the Aviation Militaire Belge or to be used operationally. At least one Rumpler C.VII flew with the Aviation Militaire Belge and was presented between July 19th and 27th 1919 at the "Exposition des Avions de Guerre et du Matériel aéronautique" (Exhibition of Warplanes an Aeronautical Eequipment). Several Rumplers found their way to the SNETA (later becoming Sabena).

According to official documents two Rumpler C.VII aircraft entered service with the Aviation Militaire Belge in mid-1919 at Evere airbase (neat Brussels).
There is photographic evidence of at least on such aircraft wearing Belgian military roundels. Unfortunately nor the c/n, nor the serial of this aircraft is identified.

Lockheed C-130H Hercules

In 1970 the Belgian Air Force ordered twelve Lockheed C-130H Hercules (type 382C-25D) transport aircraft as a replacement for the Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar.
The Hercules aircraft were delivered from mid 1972 onwards and taken on charge by No 20 Squadron of 15 Wing at Melsbroek. During the first years of operation the aircraft wore a 'Vietnam'-style camouflage scheme.
In 1990 a 'Mid-Life Improvement Programme' was started, a programme that included replacement of the outer wings (from engine N°2 and N°3 outwards) in phase 1 and installation of a self-protection suite and a complete new 'glass' cockpit with advanced avionics in phase 2. The most noticeable change during this modernisation was the fact that the camouflage was replaced by light grey colorscheme.
The Belgian C-130s have proven their value during numerous humanitarian deployments, during which several difficult missions, considered impossible by some, were successfully completed.
15 Wing was not spared by the Air Force reorganisation of the last years and No 20 Squadron was renamed Tactical Transport Flight in 2005.

Because the Belgian Air Component's two Airbus A310-222 transport aircraft suffer from frequent engine and component break-downs, the Belgian Ministry of Defence has opted to lease a single commercial Airbus A330-300 from the Portuguese airline HiFly trough French airline broker Avico on basis of a 2.000 flying hours annually use and at a fixed price of 12 million Euros per year. The 278 seat Airbus A330-300 CS-TMT (c/n 096) will be able to satisfy the Defence's need for a long range transport capacity and will allow a full contingent of troops to be transported in one flight to for example Afghanistan, while up to now several flights were needed for a similar deployment.

Since many years the Belgian Air Force operated two Boeing 727 airliners for mid-range transport of personnel and freight. Due to the ever growing demand for the use of Belgian troops on missions abroad the need arose for a large longer legged airliner. As budget restrictions did not permit the acquisition of new machines two second hand Airbus A310-222 aircraft were obtained from Singapore Airlines. Both transporters are based at Melsbroek airbase near Brussels and form part of the 15th Transport Wing.

The Belgian monarchy has always displayed a keen interest for military aviation and it came as no surprise when the Government acquired an Aero Commander for the personal use of King Baudouin in 1961. The Belgian King obtained his military wings on this aircraft and used it from its homebase at Melsbroek. The aircraft was integrated and operated by the 15th Wing. In April 1973 the Aero Commander was sold in France.

After a long search for a suitable replacement for the Douglas C-47B Dakota the Belgian government decided on April 8th, 1974 to acquire three Hawker Siddeley HS748s. The HS.748-2A was equipped with a large cargo door on the left hand side and could be transformed from cargo to passenger configuration in a minimum of time. In 2002 the HS.748 was withdrawn from use when the Embraer replacement aircraft arrived. Two airworthy HS.748 transports were donated to government of Benin while the third aircraft was also transferred to serve as a spare-parts resource.

During the taxiing H19 hit a row of pallets with jerrycans with his rotors and is thrown on its side. The fire that started was put out by the fire department. Debris of the mainrotor and the jerrycans hit the other 3 A109S (H23, H33 and H35). A piece of 30cm from the mainrotor shattered the windscreen of H35 at about 5cm of the crew. Luckily nobody from the air- or groundcrew were injured. After some Battle Damage Repair H19 was flown to its homebase of Bierset, but eventually the helicopter was written-off.

In 1975 the Belgian Air Force acquired six former Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force) Piper L21B Super Cubs for use by the Belgian Air Cadets. Contrary to the gliders the Piper Cubs are not the property of the Air Cadets and are exclusively flown by Belgian Air Force personnel. The aircraft are the responsibility of MCVZ/CMVV (Militair Centrum Voor Zweefvliegen / Centre Militaire de Vol à Voile) based at Goetsenhoven and report to No 1 Wing Training at Beauvechain. During the active gliding periods the aircraft are mainly based at Bertrix and occasionally, but can also be deployed to other bases where no winch (used to get the gliders airborne) is available. In the early period of operation the Super Cubs were painted in camouflage with day glow nose, tail and wingtips, but later the aircraft got a white paint scheme with orange engine cowling, wings and vertical tail plane.
In 2000/2002 all the remaining Super Cubs received a major overhaul, during which brand new fuselage frames, new wings and more powerful 180 HP engines were fitted. In reality the L21B's were replaced by new Super Cubs, where only some parts of the old aircraft were transferred to the new fuselages. The "new" Super Cubs are easily identified by their rounded aft window compared to a square one on the earlier models.

100906: after a busy Sunday afternoon towing gliders, the aircraft had to make an emergency landing near Beaumont-Florennes due to fuel shortage. The aircraft suffered some damage to the right wingtip when it hit a roadsign. The aircraft was dismantled on site and taken away for repairs.
