One after the other the emergency brakesystem failed and the aircraft continues straight ahead off the runway into the overrun, starts tumbling when crossing the Peer-Kleine Brogel road and caughts fire. The pilot ejected in the overrun, just before the aircraft was about to cross the road. But the parachute had no time to open and the pilot is found in a swamp outside the airbase, seriously injured and choking, but alive. Pilot: Kapt.vl. Guido Ghys (10 FBW - 31 Squadron).

  • 040468: Cat.5 Aircraft takes off, retracts undercarriage and climbs to 20 meters, suddenly the aircraft dove towards the runway, pilot pulls up, but the aircraft hits the runway in almost horizontal level. The pylontanks exploded, the pilot lost control and ran through the landinglights at the end of the runway, starts tumling in the accidented terrain of the overrun, and stops in a field. Pilot was unfortunately killed, Lt.vl. Leonard "Jim" Van Roy (10 FBW - 23 Squadron). Accident was caused by defect in the stabilisationsystem. The overrun was filled and levelled following this accident. This was the luck of Captain Ghijs who in a similar accident, bailed out in this levelled overrun and by miracle survived. See FX-71 accident
